Should you have to choose between your family or your dreams (Coco Review)?

อัปเดตเมื่อ 28 ก.ย. 2566

What is the first thing you think about when the anniversary of the death of a loved one approaches?

Today, I'd like to present you with the animated film Coco, which will make you miss those who are no longer with you but remain in your heart through Miguel's journeys.

If you're ready, let's go on a musical journey with Coco!!

Plot

If your family has an important teaching that has been adhered to for many generations, "Don't play music." So what if your dream is to become a great musician like a legendary idol? If you were told to choose between the family you love or the things you love, what would you do?

This is a story of Miguel who dreamed of being Ernesto de la Cruz, the most famous musician in Mexican history.

When the Day of the Dead, a tradition in which Mexican people believe that the spirits of their ancestors come back to visit their relatives has come around.

Miguel thinks it is an opportunity to compete in a competition to show off his musical talent that he's been secretly practicing all along.

Unfortunately, many obstacles hindered him and caused him to slip into the spirit world, and the only way to return was to get the ghosts of his ancestors to accept him, which should not be a problem if he were to give up playing music that is his lifelong dream.

Main Character

Miguel Rivera

A young boy who dreams of becoming a musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. However, his family has banned music for generations.

Miguel is my favorite character because he is a playful and brilliant boy. He also a person who wants to pursue his dream of playing music even though it goes against the traditions of his family, but he doesn't give up.

Hector

Hector is a charming trickster in the Land of the Dead who is forced to enlist Miguel's help to visit the Land of the Living.

Hector is another character I like because he is a complex character. He is fun and cheerful, but he also feels sad and sarrow about leaving his beloved family to the Land of Death.

Ernesto de la Cruz

Ernesto de la Cruz was the most famous musician in Mexican history who was admired by fans all over the world until his untimely death.

In my opinion, He is a multifaceted character. He is a respected musician who serves as an inspiration to Miguel. However, he is also hiding some secrets, just like any humans who have multiple sides in one person.

Main themes - Dreams, Family, and Death

Coco is combine three themes, connecting them together: "Dreams, Family, and Death."

The story that the movie focuses on the most is "Family", talking about the bond between families and mutual concern, which is one of the strengths of the story that is very well conveyed.

"Death" is another point that made me feel that the movie was creative and different from other stories.

By using the story of the afterlife, which is something that is rarely used by other animation. Because whenever it's used, it often makes the tone look serious, dark and scary.

Death seems unlikely to be presented to children, but for Coco it is not a problem at all. The film can create a world of death that is not scary. It was like another world where people were still living normal lives but in the form of skeletons.

As for the "dream" story, it is one of the key points in the story, but it is not as prominent as the two points mentioned above. It's like being the lead of the story that connects to the true theme of the movie.

The film presents the story of a child who dreams of becoming a superstar. But with dreams and fanaticism, he meets a family on the other side that he never had the opportunity to meet, and it is also a good opportunity to find the idol of his dreams, Ernestro de la. Cruise as well. If he hadn't gone through the afterlife, he wouldn't have had this opportunity.

As for "Music", music in this story is important in the sense that it is another bridge between two worlds in that it allows the living and the dead to communicate with each other even though they have not met face to face through the sound of music.

Personal review

Coco was a really surprising movie for me. I must confess that when I first watched the movie trailer, I almost didn't pay attention to it because I thought it would be a normal children's movie that would have a happy ending following a simple formula.

But when I actually saw Coco, this cartoon was able to make me cry, especially the scene where Coco's father sings the song Remember Me to Coco when she was a child. It really impressed me and reminded me of my grandmother, who has passed away.

The plot of the story is also interesting in that it tells a story about death that we don't normally see in normal animation. I define this as a movie that can be watched by all ages, whether it be children who watch it for fun or adults, who may be able to relate to the emotions of the characters more because they have gone through different experiences than children, whether loss, love, or family relationships

Dia de los Muertos - Day of the Dead

This festival is held from October 31 to November 2 every years

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is the central theme in which the film tells its story.

This Day of the Dead is one of the days of the year when Mexicans believe that their deceased ancestors will travel across a flower bridge from the world of the dead back to the world of the living to meet their relatives again.

In my view, Dia de los Muertos is not only a meaningful day for families to remember those who have passed away. It is also a very precious time to spend with living family members because it is better to spend time together while still alive.

Director

Lee Unkrich Adrian Molina

Coco is a Pixar animation produced by Disney. The film is directed by Lee Unkrich and Adrian Molina.

Lee Unkrich previously won the Best Animated Feature Oscar for Toy Story 3 (2010) and he also being a director of the Finding Nemo (2003)

Coco is not a movie to watch just for fun, but it is a good movie that shows the love of a family and the growth of a main character, Miguel. This story is suitable for children and everyone in the family. When you watch the movie, This will bring back memories of the importance of family.
